Untreated Substance Use Disorders Threaten the Lives of Employees and Their Families

Untreated substance use disorders do much more than reduce productivity and increase health care costs. They also expose employees and their families to greater risk in their daily lives.

Compared to employees without substance use disorders, employees with substance use disorders are significantly more likely to experience health problems related to their substance use. In the last year, there are likely to have been:

29 more employees and family members with serious psychological distress
19 more employees and family members with major depressive disorder
8 more employees and family members experiencing anxiety in the past year

more employees and family members more likely to smoke

Employees are more likely to get arrested or be involved in violence when they have a substance use disorder.

Compared to people without substance use disorders:

41 more employees and family members are likely to have been arrested in the past year
112 more employees and family members are likely to drive under the influence of alcohol and other drugs
18 more employees and family members are likely to have committed an act of domestic violence within the past year
12 more employees and family members are likely to have committed an act of violence within the past year
